In this article find out what it’s like travelling through Palma de Mallorca Airport in Winter, if it’s busy, how far in advance you should get there before your flight and what to expect.

Is Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) busy during the Winter? Yes, it is. While there are not as many people travelling through Palma de Mallorca Airport, the airport is still very busy.  This is because areas of the airport are closed for renovations and you will find most of the international flights are channelled through Terminal C.

So here are the answers to some common questions asked about what to expect travelling through Palma de Mallorca Airport in Winter.

Is Palma Airport busy in the Winter

Outside of the festive season, there are fewer passengers travelling through Palma Airport but leave enough time to get to your departure gate.

Fewer airport staff means queues can still be long at security, so do not leave getting to the airport until the last minute.

How far in advance should I get to Palma Airport before my flight?

I would recommend getting to Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) 2 hours before your flight departs if you have luggage to check-in.

This is especially important over the busy holiday season, so over Christmas and New Year.

You will see with easyJet too that it is often cheaper to check in a 15kg bag rather than paying for a carry-on suitcase.  And this is why often you will see the check-in queues in departures are longer than you would expect.

And of course at Christmas when travellers wish to carry presents, you are going to find these queues to be extremely busy.

Remember if you are travelling to or from Palma de Mallorca Airport in the Winter, do not take Christmas Crackers or they will be taken away at security.

How far is the walk to the luggage hall in Palma de Mallorca Airport after landing?

If you are arriving from an international destination over the Winter months, it is likely you will arrive at Terminal C.

So expect a 10 to 15-minute walk from getting off the plane to the arrival hall.

If you think you will not be able to walk this far, then please book special assistance with your airline before you travel.

Where can I get transport from Palma de Mallorca Airport?

Follow the signs to the taxi rank or to the public buses.  It is advisable if you are arriving over the Christmas period to book a transfer on arrival as the airport is likely to be busy.

Be warned though. The local press reported taxi shortages in December.

If you would like to book your own private transfer then book on this link here.

If you want to read more about taking a taxi in Mallorca, check this link here.

If you are getting public busses, then these are just beyond the taxi rank.  Catch the A1 bus into Palma.

It’s also possible to catch the blue EMT A2 bus to Can Pastilla and Arenal from the airport.
You can check EMT bus timetables here.

However, be advised that the TIB buses that run during the summer months to resorts stop their service from the airport in the winter.

Therefore, you will have to take the blue EMT bus to Palma’s Plaza España and change there if your destination is elsewhere on the island.

You can find the TIB bus timetables here.

Are there lifts in Palma de Mallorca Airport?

Yes, there are, but in the winter months, you will find many of these closed.

I noticed most of the lifts were not working from the Arrivals area going up the fourth floor in departures. And the only lift that was working was right by the taxi rank which was very busy.

So if you do get dropped off, ask to be dropped off in Departures.

If you are returning a hire car, use the escalators or lifts in the car park / rental terminal and head straight to the fourth floor (Departures) and avoid going via the ground floor.

Travelling through Palma de Mallorca Airport in winter – security

Normally there are two security check areas, but over the winter, usually only one remains open.

Therefore as with the check-in area, the security areas are extremely busy.

This is also because travellers are carrying more items with them, in particular winter clothing.

Plus you’ll also find less staff working at the airport which also means these queues can get quite long.

If you would like to use the priorty lounges at Palma de Mallorca Airport, you can book this here.

Are there shops at Palma de Mallorca Airport?

Avoid buying drinks from the shops before heading through security as you will have to throw away what remains. Instead, wait until the other side of security.

There is a huge Duty-free area right after security and several shops, restaurants and drinks machines in Terminal C.

Can I charge my phone or laptop at Palma de Mallorca International Airport?

Right at the end of Terminal C, you will find plug sockets and charging points.  You will also find a great relaxing, reading and studying area, with a drinks machine if your flight is delayed.

If you are travelling through Palma de Mallorca Airport in winter, then don’t forget to get there early.   Always check with your airline before travelling and you can check the departure board here and the arrivals boards here
