If you are looking to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Mallorca, then find out what it’s like and how you can enjoy this night out on the island.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Mallorca?

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Mallorca is NOT the huge party you may expect it to be. Especially when compared to celebrating New Year’s Eve in many other European cities in Europe.

However, the tradition is to flock to Plaza de Cort in the centre of Palma outside the Town Hall (or Ayuntamiento building) where you’ll find music and a countdown to the New Year.

As the bell chimes at midnight, it is traditional to drink cava and eat one grape on every chime of the clock as it strikes midnight.

Eating these grapes or uvas de suerte are considered to bring luck for the year ahead.

The atmosphere is usually brilliant so expect a lively affair as 2023 is the first year since the global pandemic that the New Year’s Eve celebrations have taken place in Plaza de Cort.

It’s been announced there will be a DJ and music from around 11:30pm on the run-up to midnight and the official countdown, and it’s expected to be busy..

After midnight, you will find some bars open in Palma to carry on the celebrations.

It’s unlikely there will be fireworks around the Cathedral. In years gone by, the firework displays were reserved for the San Sebastián celebrations around the 19th of January.

However, it looks like we won’t be seeing fireworks around the Cathedral even for San Sebastian since it’s believed that these have been damaging to the Cathedral’s masonry.

So while much of Europe celebrates New Year’s Eve in a big way,  expect New Year’s Eve in Mallorca to be more of a private affair.

And you may read on other articles circulating the internet that there are huge organised fireworks displays around the island on the beaches, I’m afraid this is just not the case.

Skies over the island will be lit up with fireworks being let off from rooftops, balconies and other private firework displays but it’s highly unlikely that any other official celebration will be planned.

If this does happen, then I’ll let you know either in this article, on the Mallorca Under the Sun Youtube channel or on the Facebook Group.

So if you are not at any of these parties or in Palma city centre, it’s a great time to grab a drink and sit on your balcony or rooftop and enjoy the atmosphere as even the quietest of residential neighbourhoods can become quite lively.

Are restaurants open in Mallorca for New Year’s Eve?

You will find a limited selection of restaurants open for New Year’s Eve dinner.  If you are visiting the island, then make a tour of the Palma before New Year’s Eve, and book early.

You are also likely to find a very limited number of restaurants open elsewhere on the island, so if you intend to spend New Year’s Eve outside of Palma, then the recommendation is to book early for dinner!

Which hotels are open in Mallorca for New Year’s Eve?

Open hotels will quite likely have their celebrations and have offers on room night stays which include a meal and entertainment.

In 2023, some Palma city centre hotels are open and running New Year’s Eve events or special dinners but you will find hotels all over the island (particularly in Playa de Palma). You will find the majority open in Palma since this is the epicentre of Christmas festivities on the island.

This list will also give a good indication (although not guaranteed) as to what is open for 2023.

As with booking a restaurant, book your hotel or your meal early to avoid disappointment.
