In this guide, find out why Colonia Sant Jordi could be the perfect destination for your next Mallorca holiday.

Colonia Sant Jordi is a charming coastal town located on the southeastern tip of Mallorca, Spain.

It is also a destination known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and relaxed atmosphere.

Colonia Sant Jordi is also located close just south of Mallorca’s salt flats.

Salt production has been a vital part of Colonia Sant Jordi’s economy for centuries. The town’s salt flats, located just outside of the town centre, are some of the oldest in Mallorca.

You will see salt production taking place here and the enormous white pyramids of salt which are the prepared for shipment worldwide.

Whether you’re looking for a sun-soaked beach holiday or an active outdoor adventure, Colonia Sant Jordi has something to offer everyone.

However, over recent years, the popularity of the beaches around Colonia Sant Jordi, has meant that visitor numbers have increased.

Reports during Summer 2023 made in the local press complained of party yachts playing music at sea, disturbing the usual peace and tranquility with of this resort.

When I last visited Colonia Sant Jordi in October 2023, I found the resort to be very quiet, the beaches were not busy and there were plenty of seats in the restaurants.

Just like everywhere in Mallorca, expect a different experience in peak season in July and August.

What is Colonia Sant Jordi like?

Colonia Sant Jordi is a small working town whose resident population explodes in the Summer months.

Popular with German visitors, you will also find that Colonia Sant Jordi explodes with Mallorcan residents at the weekend who come to the town to enjoy a Sunday meal, day on the beach or who have second homes here.

Some of the menus you will find with German translations, however the resort also attracts English speaking visitors in their droves.

You will find a small town, a port and town beach, neighbouring one of the best on the island, Es Carbó (if you are prepared to walk a little).

The town has a weekly market held every Wednesday morning on Avenida Primavera. Here you can find fresh produce, local crafts, and souvenirs.

Beaches in Colonia Sant Jordi

Colonia Sant Jordi is blessed with some of the best beaches in Mallorca. Here are a few of the most popular:

Playa Es Port beach, Colonia Sant Jordi

This family-friendly beach with a promenade and plenty of restaurants is perfect for a day out with the family.

There are some great facilities here and possibly the best disabled facilities I have seen on the island.

The short boardwalk is made of mesh allowing easier access in a wheel chair to the shore line.

You an also rent water sports equipment here in the town beach, such as SUP paddle boards and boat rentals (no license needed).

There are also beach umbrella and sunbed rentals too.

Playa Es Carbó beach, Colonia Sant Jordi

This is one of my favourite beaches in Mallorca and I included it in my guide to my favourite beaches here.

Due to its sheer beauty and distance in nature and away from a resort.

To get there, exit the town beach to the left hand side and follow the coastal path by foot for 2km.

You will enter some of the most beautiful white sands and turquoise blue seas on the island.

There are no facilities here, except for the occasional beach bar near to Colonia Sant Jordi, so take a cool bag with drinks and snacks.

Es Trenc beach

Some say this is the best beach in Mallorca.

You will find the bluest water and the whitest sand, but you will also find the crowds and huge competition for parking.

Check out a video I made on the Mallorca Under the Sun Youtube channel about Es Trenc.

However, to enjoy this beach to the max, get there before 9am in the Summer or after 4pm as people start to leave.

Contrary to popular believe, Es Trenc Beach isn’t as easily accesible as some of the guides may suggest from Colonia Sant Jordi.

You will need to either park near Estanys beach and walk, or park in Ses Covetes, Sa Rapita on either side of Es Trenc and walk.

In the Summer it gets extremely busy, so be warned!

Things to See and Do in Colonia Sant Jordi

Colonia Sant Jordi is home to a number of historical and cultural attractions, as well as plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. Here are a few ideas:

Visit Es Trenc Natural Park

Es Trenc is not only famous for its beach but it’s also a protected area and home to a variety of plant and animal life, including the endangered Mallorcan midwife toad.

This is also a big bird watching area too particularly for migrating birds in the Autumn.

Book a boat trip to Cabrera Island

Cabrera island is a World Heritage Site and a nature reserve and it’s a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, diving and hiking.

If you rent a boat, you need permission to visit Cabrera so I would recommend getting a ticket on an organised boat trip.

You can get ticket for the boat trips in Colonia Sant Jordi on the waterfront in the ticket office near the tourism office.

Cycling in Colonia Sant Jordi

You will see why this area is so popular with cyclists.

Enjoy the flat terrain and well marked cycle routes in this area, with plenty of small town stop offs for food and refreshments.

Colonia Sant Jordi weekly market

Held every Wednesday morning on Avenida Primavera, the market is a great place to find fresh produce, local crafts, and souvenirs.

Visit the Flor de Sal Factory in Colonia Sant Jordi

One of the most famous producers of salt in Colonia Sant Jordi is the Flor de Sal Factory.

The factory produces a type of sea salt that is known for its delicate flavor and texture.

The Flor de Sal Factory is a popular tourist destination, and visitors can take tours of the factory to learn about the salt production process.

Visitors can also purchase the factory’s salt products, which include a variety of flavored salts.

This is a must visit if you are holidaying in Colonia Sant Jordi.
